If you are reading this post and visiting our website you’d be surprised to find out that we offer mattress cleaning. I mean sure, we have a slide on our homepage and a services page about it but that’s not obvious. On top of that we are called ‘Carpet Cleaning Sydney’ so you’d logically assume the only thing we can handle are carpets. Mattress cleaning is something we expanded into a few years ago and have picked up a few tips to make mattress cleaning easier.
Wash The Sheets
The first thing to do before cleaning is to take off all the sheets, pillows and blankets. You will need to wash these separately before making the bed again. Use any form of washing you wish. Personally I prefer to wash whites and colours in different loads so as not to spoil the colour. You don’t have to do that though of course. Just throw them in the washing machine anyway you like and set it to your favourite cycle.
Vacuum That Sucker
While the washing machine is running grab the vacuum cleaner and go at the mattress as if it were a rug. Give it a good solid going over with the vacuum to remove and visible dirt, dust or loose hairs. If you’ve been doing this up nice and close you may have noticed a slight smell in the mattress. The reason for that is that mattresses tend to stink a little.
Kill The Stink
It’s not a big deal and in truth nearly every mattress I’ve ever cleaned had some sort of unsightly smell to it. It is simply your bodies natural odour from sweat over time. Even a non-sweater gives off a little perspiration. That’s because the mattress just gradually soaks it up. This is easy enough to remove though and we have a couple of ways to do it. The first is to use Febreze and spray it over the top of the mattress. This will neutralize the smell but it won’t treat the cause, the yucky bacteria still living in the mattress.
For this reason I recommend using some baking soda. Use a little and rub it into the mattress with a little water if you have to. As the baking soda dries is will absorb the odour into the powder. Once its dry to the touch you can just vacuum it off the top of the mattress, easy as you like!
Clean All Stains
A mattress isn’t any different to any other surface in that it can stain like everything else. Some of the more common stains in mattresses are blood, urine and general perspiration stains. Rather than go through every stain in this article you should check out this guide on stain removal. Simply follow the steps for whatever type of stain you have.
This is the part that will undoubtedly take you the longest but the effort will be worth it.
Flip It
Once the mattress is dry, all the baking soda removed and stains cleaned it’s time to do it all again. Now take the mattress and flip it over onto the other side. Do everything you did on the other side to this side too. Once you are ready here you should have a beautiful clean mattress.
Get a Mattress Protector
Before you go refitting the sheets you should make one more consideration. If you don’t already have a mattress protector consider purchasing one. It will save you a lot of time in cleaning the mattress and you won’t have to do it anywhere near as regularly as you would without one. If you’d like more tips on keeping the mattress clean then check out our article on the subject right here.
So there you have it folks. While it’s not exhaustive this guide should help you to clean your mattress next time you need it done. If you couldn’t be bothered with all that then feel free to give us a call. We’d be happy to help and offer our services or a free quote.
