It seems like you can mop your tile floors and then a few days later they are grimy again. What’s the solution? A few tile experts share their tips on how to keep your kitchen tiles clean.
Tip #1: Vacuum your tiles, don’t sweep with a broom. Sweeping tiles will never get up all of the dust and food particles that resettle a few days later if you just use a broom, later followed around by a mop. Many manufacturers have recognized this, and have come up with many inexpensive and very maneuverable machines to clean tile floors in the kitchen as well as the bathroom. This is probably the #1 thing people over look when they want to get their tiles clean.
Tip #2: Know the surface you are cleaning. These days, you will notice that there are an incredible variety of cleaners for tile, even at the grocery store. This is because each cleaner works on different kinds of tile. Many people have ceramic tile, but there are also porcelain, laminates, linoleum, vinyl, marble, stone, etc. Find out the brand and type of tile you have in your home and go to their website. They will either have products you can buy or tile cleaning products they recommend. It may seem like a sales job, but by using the right kind of cleaner for your tiles, you will see better results.
Tip #3: Determine the kind of dirt you are dealing with. This may sound like obvious advice, but if you are cleaning bathroom tile, then you are probably dealing with soap scum and need a soap scum remover and a strong brush. For the kitchen, it is more likely that you will need a degreaser or a product that says it cuts grease. Also let the solution have time to soak in and do its work. If you notice, many commercials show that products need to be left on wet for a while in order to penetrate the grime and actually work. So don’t rinse any product off right away, but instead, keep it wet for half an hour and then rinse it off and dry the tile.
Tip #4: Keep mats on tile floors. After cooking residue and soap scum, the rest of the dirt that gets on tile is from the outside. Keep mats on the tile in front of doors, the stove, and the tub, and you will have less dirt to clean up. Just make sure that the mats are washable and clean them once a week.
