Bait and Switch: The ad may say that the company will clean your carpets for $5 per room, but when the company shows up to your house, they will say that “steam cleaning” only means spraying water in the carpet and then cleaning it up. If you want the full treatment, with pre-treating, stain removal, cleaning agents, and hot water – that will cost you hundreds of dollars per room.
Ask these kind of people to leave right away. Do not sign anything. If these people get started with their work, you may wind up talking to the police and paying for the services anyway.
High Pressure Sales Job: If you have particularly dirty places on the carpet, the salesman will tell you that once this part of the carpet is cleaned correctly, the rest of the carpet will look bad. Therefore, the entire carpet will need the same special treatment which will cost much more money.
This is simply not the case. If you are dealing with a salesman/technician, they make their money by selling you more services. So if you think there is a flaw in their logic, then they are trying to snowball you into paying more money for some made-up services. Instead, find a carpet cleaning company that has sales people who are separate from the technicians – if you are really serious about paying the right amount of money for a good carpet cleaning service.
Also be wary of a sales person who insists that their method of cleaning (although more expensive) is superior to another way. They are all 3 equally efficient and there is no superior way to clean your carpets, just different ways.
Untrained Technician: Ask your technician about their experience and where they were trained. If they have no more experience than you, you might as well pay the money and go rent a machine to do it yourself. At least you will care about the job being performed on your carpets.
