The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Wine Stains From Your Carpet

carpet 28 Jan 2014

Many months ago we write a blog post about removing red wine stains from your carpet. We had some interest in this at the time so now we have a follow up post about removing any types of wine stains. Keep reading to find out more:

Red wine is wonderful until someone spills it on your carpet. Then there is the immediate buzzkill of thinking how you will get the carpet to look like there was nothing ever spilled there at all! However, the best way to get wine stains out of a carpet is not to overreact. This will lead you to panic and do things that will make the stain worse. Here is a guide to get the wine stain out, step by step:

First, gently blot at the wine stain with a paper towel, being careful not to push it into the padding of the carpet where you can’t get at it. Remember, the goal here is to draw out as much liquid as you can to the surface and capture it in the paper towel.

Next, if you have it, you can dab some club soda onto the stain. Many people balk at this idea, but what small dabs of club soda will do is dilute the wine and take away some of its staining power while breaking it down a bit.

Again, keep blotting as much of the wine up as you can. Once you have done this, you can spray a little hydrogen peroxide on the stain and then sprinkle some baking soda on it. Let this set for about fifteen minutes and then vacuum; the stain should come out with a little more dabbing, and if needed hydrogen peroxide.

If this doesn’t work, then there are other things to try as well:

Believe it or not, you can spill a bit of white wine on the red wine stains and use that to neutralize the color. Then blot it up carefully, being careful not to push it down into the carpet.

You can also use many different carpet cleaners to clean the stain. It is best to talk to a carpet store first hand and ask which one they recommend for red wine.

If you aren’t sure how you want to proceed and don’t have any cleaners on hand, you can pour ordinary table salt onto the stain, which will keep it from setting until out figure out what to do. The main thing is to blot up as much of the wine as you can and get something on the stain as soon as possible (even the salt) to keep it from setting.
